Last Monday night (March 5th), the little watched Media Watch critiqued a segment I gave on the Channel 10 program, Studio 10. Typical of Media Watch, there was a blatant criticism of a commercial television station presenting commercial television.This segment on Studio 10 ran for about 10 minutes and was basically about heart health. I was asked by the company Nutralife to present this segment and they requested that I mention their product which is a kyolic garlic preparation. I have used this product in my practice for a number of years with significant benefits in BP reduction for my patients. There are also two very well performed studies published in peer-reviewed literature showing reduction in the progression of coronary artery disease using coronary calcium scoring and also a regression of coronary artery disease after 12 months of high-dose kyolic garlic (four capsules daily) using CT coronary angiography. Purely because a serial pest, who is a member of the group who call themselves the Friends of Science in Medicine whose basic role is to destroy complementary medicine and maintain the status quo of orthodox medicine, complained about a Nutralife commercial featuring Lisa Wilkinson stating the company could not support some of their claims. I strangely did not receive his memo that I should be agreeing with his opinion.As I wrote in a previous editorial, this serial pests complaint was based around the ridiculous claim that Nutralifes kyolic aged garlic extract supports a healthy BP. This meaningless comment is all that the company is allowed to claim rather than discuss the well performed scientific papers that support the use of this extract for the management of BP in people with established hypertension and the potential for management of our biggest killer, coronary artery disease. I have never suggested that any form of complementary medicine is a replacement for the stronger, well studied and well funded orthodox medicine but purely that some forms of evidence based complementary medicine are excellent adjuncts to lifestyle principles in healthy people and orthodox medicine for people with established disease.Just because one so-called expert, this serial pest, cannot interpret the medical literature correctly, it doesnt make him right and therefore I have no interest in reading his memo, to quote Mr Barry from Media Watch. Firstly, there was no mention on the Media Watch segment that for 9 minutes out of the 10 minutes I discussed heart health and during the final minute discussed kyolic garlic with no mention of the company or the specific product. I had no idea that any mention of Nurtralife would be made after the segment. I also had no idea that the company had actually paid Channel 10 for the segment.The only part of the Media Watch segment that was accurate was that I was paid nothing to appear on Studio 10 and purely did so because I believe in complementary medicine and feel is important to promote the message of good health. Antioxidants: Panacea Or Marketing Propaganda
Sometimes the most accepted medical theories turn out to be wrong. Bloodletting was standard practice for 3000 years. Not until the late 19th century, was it discredited. Such errors are not confined to the distant past. In all likelihood, you actively participate in a false medical belief that could be harmful.More than 4 in 5 American adults (86%) take vitamins. One motivator for this remarkable trend is the notion that antioxidant supplements (vitamin C, vitamin E, alpha and beta carotene, selenium) prevent disease and slow aging. This firmly held belief by many doctors and the public, is completely unsubstantiated.Clinical research over recent decades, studying hundreds of thousands of people, has repeatedly concluded that there is no evidence of a beneficial effect from supplements on all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, cancer or cognitive function. The lay press and nutraceutical marketing have not been deterred by the widespread publication of these findings. In fact the use of vitamins continues to grow. A Google search for benefits of antioxidant supplements yields more than 28 million results. Revenue for the US supplement industry in 2018 reached 31 billion dollars.Ironically these antioxidant supplements are not only ineffective in treating or preventing disease. Recent research suggests they can work against us. Analyses of large human intervention trials suggest that antioxidant supplementation can cause a higher incidence of cancer and increase overall mortality. This is in keeping with a growing understanding of reactive oxygen species (ROS), the target of antioxidants. It appears that ROS trigger protective mechanisms within the cell that are essential to our health. Physical exercise provides a dramatic demonstration of this phenomenon. Exercise is known to produce significant amounts of ROS. It is also well established that exercise prevents many of the most common chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, dementia and certain cancers. Exercise lengthens lifespan as well. In fact, taking antioxidants before exercise has been shown to block its positive effects on glucose metabolism that can prevent diabetes.How did we get the antioxidant story wrong?To answer this question one must briefly review what causes reactive oxygen species (ROS) and how the body responds to them.When cells burn oxygen to generate energy, ROS are created, much like the exhaust from a cars engine. An overload of ROS causes oxidative stress that damages cellular function.For some time, a growing body of evidence has suggested that ROS increase in chronic diseases such as cancer, type 2 diabetes, dementia and cardiovascular disease. Test tube simulations demonstrated the damaging effects of high ROS on cell cultures and the prevention of such damage by antioxidants. This led to the conclusion that antioxidants could protect against these chronic illnesses.However, this protective effect was not observed in animal or human models.More recent research has provided an explanation. In observing the impact of lower concentrations of ROS, a protective function was discovered. In other words, ROS, depending on their concentration, can be beneficial or toxic. At moderate levels they exert a positive adaptive stress response that prevents cell damage. This transformed our perception of ROS from toxic byproducts of metabolism to essential signaling molecules for health.The list of things known unequivocally to promote health, prevent disease and extend healthspan is short. Lets look at three of the most studied; physical activity, caloric restriction and a diet rich in plant foods. Physical activity demands an increase in energy production by the cells power generators, the mitochondria. This stressor results in a transient increase in ROS. Elevated ROS concentrations in turn trigger cellular mechanisms that increase both antioxidant production and the activity and number of mitochondria, a marker of fitness. Caloric restriction in lab animals is known to reduce the incidence of diabetes and cancer as well as extend lifespan. The reduced energy intake associated with caloric restriction has also been shown to increase mitochondrial ROS. Research has demonstrated that calorically restricted animals given feed with antioxidant supplements did not experience the health benefits. What this suggests is that antioxidants generated by our body in response to various stressors promote health. Exogenous antioxidants in the form of supplements compromise our ability to manage physiological stress and thereby promote illness and accelerate the aging process.Epidemiological studies link diets rich in plant foods with a lower incidence of chronic disorders such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimers and Parkinsons disease. This raises the question of whether these diets promote health because of their antioxidant content, as health food marketing would have us believe.Phytochemicals, biologically active compounds found in plants, evolved to protect them from environmental threats such as bacteria, fungi and pests. These noxious natural pesticides when consumed by humans induce a mild cellular stress response that boosts functions that protect against future stressors. This includes the production of antioxidants.Again, this implies that the consumption of antioxidants does not promote health. Rather, exposure to moderate stress activates signaling pathways that confer resistance to more severe stress. This response not only protects against the stressor that initiated the process but also against nonspecific challenges such as oxidative, metabolic or thermal stressors.When moderate exposure to a stressor optimizes health while greater exposure is toxic, it is called hormesis. Like plants, we have evolved to cope with specific challenges. As hunter-gatherers we consumed a plant-rich diet and regularly experienced food shortages, temperature swings, and the need for daily physical activity. These conditions provided the training camp for our biology. Evolution crafted an animal adapted for this scenario. Unwittingly, we have eliminated the stressors that provide our fitness.We often presume to know what is good or bad for us and why. But proving such beliefs can be quite difficult. The antioxidant story exposes our hubris. ROS were assumed to be a necessary evil of using oxygen as fuel, a flaw that we imagined we could correct with antioxidants. Such flaws rarely survive millennia of evolutionary optimization. Sophisticated scientific research has yielded unsophisticated recommendations. Move more, eat real food, fast regularly, sleep, go outside, spend time with friends, help others and do something to bind stress.Perhaps it is the very simplicity of these directives that makes them easy to dismiss. We have been conditioned to perceive medication and supplements as more powerful interventions than the remarkable effects of a good nights sleep.Ubiquitous social forces conspire against us in the form of fast food, escalators, automobile culture, the passivity of television and the marketing of medications and supplements, to name a few.For now, the most powerful generators of health reside within us and our behavior.

But what do we know about its risks and benefits?With regard to benefits, we know that lecithin supplements are heavily promoted as a panacea for:Cardiovascular healthLiver and cell functionFat transport and fat metabolismReproduction and child developmentPhysical performance and muscle functionCell communicationImprovement in memory, learning, and reaction timeRelief of arthritisHealthy hair and skinTreatment for gallstonesI have always been suspicious of promotions that promise to cure all human ailments. But a recent review of a number of scientific papers on PubMed reveals that the researchers still refer to hoped for lecithin benefits with terms like may, might, theoretically could and not with does. Further, most papers and credible health-related websites point out that there is a woeful lack of research about the efficacy of this particular dietary supplement.So, I believe that, at this point in time, it is safe to say that none of the claims about lecithin have any credible evidence to back them up. There are two possible (but minor) exceptions:Lecithin is a natural emulsifier, so claims that it dissolves gallstones may be credible. However, I havent come across a good study documenting it. And, WebMD gives lecithin treatment of gallstones an unenthusiastic recommendation of possibly ineffective. A small study out of Tokyo recently found that high-dose (1200 mg/day) soy lecithin increased vigor in middle-aged women who presented with fatigue compared to a placebo. The answer: fatty acids!Not exactly the stuff to help in weight reduction, cardiovascular health, or liver function. In fact, theoretically they could work against all those potentially wonderful benefits.MetabolomicsBefore we go any further, let me introduce a relatively new medical term: metabolomics. We are all familiar with the concept of genomics, meaning the study of the genome, or the total genetic content and its effect on health and disease.Similarly, the sum total of chemicals, substrates, and metabolites in the body are called the metabolome. Metabolomics is the study of those substances in health and disease. The advantage of taking an all-inclusive approach is that it is unbiased.The classical scientific approach is to study a specific gene or molecule, essentially ignoring everything else. This is akin to peeping through a keyhole. You see only what the hole allows you to see.On the other hand, studying the whole genome or the whole metabolome gives a complete picture of everything that is involved in the process being studied.For instance, for many years, only one or two genes were thought to be involved in the development of type 2 diabetes. Why? Because these were the only genes that made sense as targets for study. The advent of whole-genome studies demonstrated the involvement of dozens of genes in the disease. This was a complete surprise.Whats the downside of lecithin supplements?So, lets return to the question at hand. If lecithin supplements dont cause any harm, why not give it the benefit of the doubt? After all, a future study may prove its benefit.In a paper published in Nature, Wang and his collaborators at the Cleveland Clinic studied the metabolic fate of lecithin. They used the metabolomic approach to look for circulating small molecules associated with coronary heart disease. They screened blood from patients who had experienced a heart attack or stroke. Then they compared those results with the blood of people who had not had those serious cardiovascular events.They found major differences in choline, betaine, and trimethylamine (TMA). It turns out that gut bacteria produce these metabolites from lecithin. And then they convert them to trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO).This terminal metabolite, TMAO, is a known atherogenic substance. That means it is involved in atherosclerotic plaque formation.None of the metabolites appeared in the blood after the gut flora was wiped out with an antibiotic. Could it be that the gut flora in people with cardiovascular disease is different in some way from that of healthy people? We dont know, but we do know that the physiological state of a person can determine the gut flora. For instance, the gut flora of obese people is markedly different from that of the non-obese.Based on this study alone, we still cant tell if these lecithin metabolites are causative factors, or whether they are just markers of the disease. This is because correlative studies can show only correlations, not cause and effect. Wait, wait, theres moreIs lecithin the only culprit that produces TMAO? Red meat contains another triethylamine. This molecule, called L-Carnitine, is similar to choline and lecithin. Like them, it should be metabolized by the gut flora into MAO and then converted to TMAO in the circulation. The same Cleveland Clinic group examined the production of TMAO by omnivores, vegans, and vegetarians following ingestion of L-carnitine.They found that the omnivorous humans had higher levels of circulating TMAO. The reason? Meat eaters have gut bacterial flora different than vegetarians and vegans. It contains species that feast on triethylamines: choline, lecithin, and carnitine.Now, lets look at an interesting study published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine by Tang and colleague. It had two phases.In the first phase, the investigators gave healthy participants a phosphatidylcholine challenge using a stable isotope-labeled form of the phospholipid. They then used mass spectrometry to monitor choline metabolites before and after the suppression of gut microbiota with broad-spectrum antibiotics.They found that the phosphatidylcholine challenge increased all choline metabolites. Antibiotics suppressed the generation of TMAO metabolites. They reappeared after the antibiotics were discontinued.In the second phase, the researchers examined the relationship between fasting plasma TMAO levels and incident cardiovascular events over a 3-year period. They studied more than 4,000 participants undergoing elective coronary angiography. They found an independent, dose-dependent relationship between the metabolite and the risk of a cardiovascular event on the basis of the TMAO quartile: The highest quartile had 2.54 times the risk over the lowest quartile.The bottom lineHere is what we know about lecithin:The phospholipid phosphatidylcholine (lecithin) is the major dietary source of choline, an essential nutrient that is part of the B-complex vitamin family. Choline has various metabolic roles, ranging from its critical involvement in lipid metabolism and cell-membrane structure to its role as a precursor for the synthesis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.Red meat, processed meats, and egg yolk contain high levels of lecithin.Gut flora metabolizes phosphatidylcholine (lecithin) into three metabolites that show up at high concentrations in people who have had a heart attack or a stroke. We metabolize those bacterial metabolites into TMAO, a known atherogenic substance.A large 4,000-patient study over 3 years showed a significant correlation between TMAO levels and cardiac events and stroke.Still, although highly suggestive, none of these studies have demonstrated a direct effect of lecithin, or its metabolite TMAO, as a cause of atherosclerosis. So, how does one make a decision about whether to take lecithin supplements?Since the lecithin metabolite, TMAO, is a known atherogenic substance, I believe that until we better understand whether it actually causes atherosclerosis, the prudent approach would call for moderation.That means limiting your intake of these foodstuffs with high levels of lecithin. Further, since there is no credible evidence supporting claims of health benefits, there is no reason to take high doses of lecithin in the form of nutritional supplements. If you do choose to take them, based on what we know now, you could be increasing your risk of a heart attack or stroke in exchange for no known benefit. Should You Take Vitamin C After Exercise?

Even if you dont have asthma, it can feel like your throat is shrinking, making it difficult and uncomfortable to breathe. This may be a result of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, and new research has found that our old friend, vitamin C, may be just the thing to reduce its effects.A new type of nutrient timing?Olumia Life recommends taking only a limited number of proven supplements to aid in your diet and workouts, such as fish oil, for example. Taking fish oil may be important for most every day, or at least when your meals lack the omega-3 fatty acids you need, but multivitamins are not nearly what the adverts would have you believe. With a healthy diet, you really dont need all that stuff.Other supplements, like whey protein, can be used anytime and can also be used before or after workouts to help you improve your performance and results. Vitamin C is often thought of as a pill you might want to take every day, but a study by researchers in Finland has found that vitamin C supplements are really something to take just after a workout, not as a substitute for the healthy foods that contain it.Vitamin C and exhalationScientists at the University of Helsinki conducted a meta-analysis of other studies to come to various conclusions about what taking vitamin C after a workout can do for exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. Their work was published in the journal of Allergy, Asthma & Clinical Immunology. FEV1 stands for forced expiratory volume in 1 second. In regular English, it means how much you can exhale in one second after fully breathing in. Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction inhibits this score, meaning we cant breathe out as much air as we want. By comparing the FEV1 of subjects taking vitamin C after workouts to those who didnt, scientists could see if the vitamin has any effect.They found that vitamin C taken after physical activity was able to lower the severity, length and likelihood of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction by as much as 50%.Why vitamin C?Vitamin C has a wide array of functions in our bodies. Its an essential nutrient after all. In this case, the possible reasons why vitamin C helps after workouts may be it role in producing various compounds in the body that inhibit breathing problems.This isnt a set-in-stone application of vitamin C, though. Its a new discovery, so exactly whether you should try it is up to you. But while consuming citrus fruits isnt going to affect you negatively, Vitamin C is not the wonder-drug youve been looking for. The Common ColdOur friendly, neighborhood common cold comes in hundreds of hilarious viruses. Thank them personally for your sore throat, runny nose, headache, fever, etc. And rejoice in the fact that these respiratory infections dont care for antibiotics. You are on your own and nobody is being sympathetic. We are avoiding you. You are a mess.Vitamin CRemember when youd get a cold and your family would bring you a tangerine and hot lemon drink every ten minutes? Ascorbic Acid was isolated in the 1930's, and became popular in the 1970's when it was hailed as a cold preventative. But lets go back even further than that. James LindThis Scottish Physician was extremely interested in sailors during the 18th Century; specifically how many of them had scurvy. What we now view as a Vitamin C deficiency was a complete mystery, so Lind started one of the first known clinical trials.Splitting 12 sailors into pairs, he gave some citrus fruits to eat, while others got sea water, spice paste, vinegar and sulfuric acid. Tasty stuff. The participants most recovered were the citrus-eaters. Hooray, oranges and lemons cure scurvy. Only, not so much. During his professional life he also campaigned for better ventilation on ships, cleansing of living areas and increased nutritional variation which all contributed to better health for the sailors.So what does Vitamin C actually do?Put simply: Not nothing, not everything. Vitamin C for preventing and treating the common cold), they concluded that Vitamin C intake to prevent the common cold was not as black-and-white as youd expect, but there seem to be some positive points that came from it.Firstly, taking Vitamin C when youve got a cold probably isnt going to cure it. Taking Vitamin C regularly also fails to reduce the incidence of colds in the general population.However if you take Vitamin C supplements in times of severe physical exertion, it might be useful.Taking Vitamin C as a regular supplement, over a long period of time, is cheap and safe and your choice. In short, Vitamin C might help you, but not by itself.The Placebo EffectPeople give the placebo effect a bit of a bad name.If you get sugar pills instead of real medication in a trial, you could be prolonging your sickness true. But if drinking a hot lemon beverage and eating oranges makes you feel like youre not going to get a cold, is that so bad? Youd be surprised at what the brain can do when you believe in something.Vitamin C supplement companies are going to continue to push their product as the cure. All supplement companies have to. Vitamin B Linked to Increased Risk of Lung Cancer
You can imagine my surprise and concern when I read this headline from one of the popular medical websites. Another headline from a different medical website on the same subject stated, Clear link between heavy vitamin B intake and lung cancer.It is very easy to read the abstracts or possibly only the conclusion from an observational trial such as this and make such an outrageous, sensationalist headline. I have obtained the full paper from the Journal of Clinical Oncology. The papers title was Long-term, supplemental, one-carbon metabolism related Vitamin B use in relation to Lung Cancer risk in the Vitamin and Lifestyle Cohort (VITAL).It is important, before you throw away all of your vitamins, to understand exactly the basis of this study. This study began in the year 2000 and involved 77,118 participants aged somewhere between 50 to 76. The participants were followed for an average of 6 years & during this time 808 people developed primary lung cancer of which 331 were men.At the start of the study, all people were asked to fill in a questionnaire about their smoking habits, alcohol intake, diet and ingestion of Multivitamins over the prior 10 years, before the follow up period. There was no information regarding exercise or sleeping habits nor were any psychologic profiles performed on these participants apart from a rudimentary look at their education.The basic conclusion of the trial stated there was somewhere between a 30 to 40% increased risk in lung cancer amongst men who took higher doses of the individual supplements, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12. There was no increased risk with folic acid intake, nor was there any association with standard multivitamins. When I carefully read the entire study, it was clear that there were some significant issues and concerns around linking the sensationalist headlines and the true nature of the study. This is not a criticism of the researchers but rather a criticism of the people who clearly cannot understand science and want to create scaremongering amongst the general public.Now lets look at the information that comes from this purely observational trial relying on the ability of each individual in the trial to recall how many vitamins & at what doses they have swallowed over the prior 10 years (hardly particularly accurate science). Regardless, lets assume, purely for the sake of the argument that all of the participants in the research trial did accurately report their previous 10 year intake of vitamins. The results of the study suggested the following key points1) There was no association between higher dose individual B group vitamin intake and lung cancer in women2) In men who were either current higher dose individual vitamin B6 & B12 users and current or former cigarette smokers, there was a modest increase in lung cancer risk for only the more significantly cigarette-associated lung cancers. Interestingly, in the current or former smokers who used to take high dose individual supplementation of B6 & B12, but were no longer doing so, there was an even higher lung cancer risk. 3) Adeno-carcinoma accounts for 40% of lung cancer and is not always related to cigarette smoking. Interestingly, there was no increase in this form of cancer amongst the former or current smokers who consumed high doses of the individual B group vitamins.4) There was no association between any vitamin use and lung cancer in the lifelong non-smokers. So, what should we take from this study? This study actually reminds me of be ATBC trial performed on 29,000 Finnish smokers showing a slight increase in lung cancer in > 20 cigs/day smokers who took synthetic beta-carotene 20 mg daily over the eight years of the study period.Synthetic vitamins are of much lower quality & have never been shown to have any therapeutic benefit.To me, the clear message is quite obvious and that is- dont smoke. If you are a current or former smoker, there is always the potential for a lung tumour to develop. It takes one cancer cell nine years to become 2 cm of tumour and then over the next six months, if not treated, up to 2 kg of tumour may form in your body. If you do have an undetected lung cancer brewing in your body because of your smoking habits, it may be that flogging these early cancerous cells with high doses of B group vitamins could potentially accentuate the growth of these actively mutating cells, which steal high quality nutrients at the expense of your normal cells in people who already have their immunity affected by the very dangerous habit of smoking. Another important point for those people reading this summary in Australia is that the vast majority of American supplements are made to food standard and often have contaminants, which potentially could interact poorly with the toxins in cigarette smoke. What it says on the side of the bottle is often not what you get in the supplements in the US. Whereas supplements made in Australia are generally made to pharmaceutical grade and are of much better quality. This particular study was not a randomised controlled trial where each participant received the same standardised B group supplement but was purely based on a questionnaire relying on a persons memory of the intake of supplements, purchased through their own volition over the past 10 years.The authors have raised some interesting points but have certainly proven nothing apart from the fact that smoking cigarettes is a lottery and swallowing any form of supplementation will not compensate for this extremely dangerous habit. It was quite interesting that the rates of lung cancer were higher in former users of supplementation rather than the current users. Im not really sure why this is the case but it also raises some interesting questions.The bottom line he is very straightforward- dont smoke & dont accept a one-line sensationalist headline
Vitamin D in the Time of Covid-19
No clickbait title here: We have no high-level evidence that taking vitamin D reduces your risk of developing COVID-19. Today, we turn to how vitamin D can affect your immune health, before addressing the COVID-19 rumor that has been swirling around.Vitamin DVitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in very few foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement. It is also produced internally when ultraviolet rays from sunlight strike the skin and trigger the making of vitamin D.This vitamin plays an important role in maintaining the health of our immune system health. Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with a myriad of maladies, including:breast cancercolon cancerprostate cancerheart diseasedepressionweight gainother conditionsBut while studies show that people with higher levels of vitamin D have a lower risk of disease, they do not definitively prove that lack of vitamin D causes disease or that vitamin D supplements would lower risk. The Vitamin D Council a scientist-led group promoting vitamin D deficiency awareness suggests vitamin D treatment might [emphasis added] be found helpful in treating or preventing autism, autoimmune disease, cancer, chronic pain, depression, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, flu, neuromuscular diseases, and osteoporosis. However, there have been no definitive clinical trials.Thats why the US Institute of Medicine expert committees November 2010 review offered this:There is no conclusive evidence that vitamin D, by itself, offers wide-ranging health benefits. Covid-19 and vitamin DLets begin by stipulating that there is currently no cure for COVID-19 and no preventive measures other than social distancing and proper hygiene practices can protect you from developing this disease.That said, some research shows that having healthy levels of vitamin D, as well as taking a vitamin D supplement, can help keep your immune system healthy and may protect against respiratory illnesses in general.This vitamin helps us to mount an immune response, and has both anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory properties and is crucial for the activation of immune system defenses. Vitamin D is known to enhance the function of immune cells, including T-cells and macrophages, that protect your body against pathogens.In this context, it is perhaps not surprising that low levels of vitamin D have been associated with an increased susceptibility to infection, disease, and immune-related disorders. Respiratory illnesses linked to low vitamin D include tuberculosis, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as well as viral and bacterial respiratory infections. So, it seems vitamin D is important for immune function. But can taking it reduce your probability of getting SARS-Coronavirus-2 (COVID-19)? Today, there is no cure or treatment for COVID-19. In fact, no studies have investigated the effect of vitamin D supplements or vitamin D deficiency on the risk of contracting the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19. Still, recognizing multiple studies have shown that vitamin D deficiency can harm immune function and increase your risk of developing respiratory illnesses, should you consider getting some vitamin D?A meta-analysis that included 11,321 people from fourteen countries demonstrated that supplementing with vitamin D decreased the risk of acute respiratory infections in both those who were deficient in vitamin D and those with adequate levels. The investigators included randomized, double blind, placebo controlled trials of supplementation with vitamin D3 or vitamin D2 of any duration and if data on incidence of acute respiratory tract infection were collected prospectively and pre-specified as an efficacy outcome.Here are the conclusions of the researchers:Vitamin D supplementation was safe and it protected against acute respiratory tract infection overall. Patients who were very vitamin D deficient and those not receiving bolus doses experienced the most benefit.Overall, the study showed that vitamin D supplements reduced the risk of developing at least one acute respiratory infection by a relative twelve percent. Moreover, the review found that vitamin D supplements were most effective when taken daily or weekly in small doses and less effective when taken in larger, widely spaced doses. But, remember that there is no scientific evidence that taking supplemental vitamin D can protect you from developing COVID-19. However, being deficient in vitamin D may increase your susceptibility to overall infection and disease by harming immune function. For me, I aim for a modicum of physical activity, adequate sleep of seven to nine hours daily, and mindfulness as a means to reduce stress.
