Thunder Ridge Ski Area

Thunder Ridge is a small ski area located in Patterson, NY. Because it is located just 75 minutes from New York City, the mountain attracts skiers and snowboarders from across the New York area. While it does not receive a lot of snowfall, Thunder Ridge does have snowmaking capabilities which can cover 90% of the mountain. Because it is open at night, Thunder Ridge is a haven for high school ski racing. The mountain hosts part of Hudson Valley League racing. In 2014 the area came under management of Dean Ryder, manager of the Putnam County National Bank after the previous managers could no longer afford to take care of the property as a result of the Great Recession. Under previous ownership the mountain was known as Birch Hill (1957-1968), Big Birch (1968-1995), Thunder Ridge Ski Area (1995-present).

Ski area

The resort formerly had the only winter ski area in Georgia, but after changing ownership in 2004, the resort's ski slopes were permanently closed after 35 years. The former ski lodge at 696 Sky Valley Way now houses a church under its two unique eight-gabled roofs, while the chairlift house and equipment-rental shop were demolished in January 2007. To the immediate south of this, condos were built on the north-facing slope which previously had the five ski runs, named Panorama, Scooter, Kamikaze, Gravity's Revenge, and Pokey, the last of which was the bunny slope for children with its own rope tow. These provided 15-16 acres (6.1-6.5 ha) of skiable terrain with a vertical drop of 210 feet (64 m). Only three other aerial lifts remain in Georgia: the Sky Buckets open-air gondola at Six Flags Over Georgia, and the Summit Skyride tram to the top of Stone Mountain, both in metro Atlanta; and the chairlift across Lake Winnepesaukah, an amusement park even closer to Georgia's northern state line in Rossville, a suburb adjoining Chattanooga, Tennessee. After the closures of Sky Valley and Ski Scaly, Sapphire Valley is the nearest ski area, while Cloudmont in far northeast Alabama remains the southernmost in the eastern U.S. since 1970, beating Sky Valley after only a year. Four western ski areas go as far south as the latitude of middle Georgia, while Mexico's only ski area is slightly further south than Miami.

Badger Mountain Ski Area

Badger Mountain Ski Area is a small ski area, 4 miles SW of Waterville, Washington. It is located on the northeastern flank of Badger Mountain. Established in 1939, it is currently a volunteer run ski area sponsored by the local Waterville Lions Club. The resort has a relatively low elevation, of 3,145 ft (959 m), therefore the ski area does not usually receive adequate snow until January. The ski area has one small lodge, which has a small selection of rentals, and a kitchen.

Kendall Mountain Ski Area

Kendall Mountain is a small ski area located at the town of Silverton, Colorado. It was developed by the Grand Imperial Hotel in the 1950s and opened for business in the early 1960s. In 1983, the area was found to be operating without a permit and remained closed until the late 1990s. It advertises itself as "the cheapest ski area in the West." The area has run with a single 950-foot (290 m) tow rope for most of its operation but upgraded to a double chairlift in 2006, purchased from the Quechee Ski Area in Vermont. Kendall Mountain's base elevation is 9,300 feet (2,800 m) and has 35 acres (140,000 m2) of skiable terrain in 11 runs. Research since 2017 by the town of Silverton determined that the area has viable terrain for expansion of the ski area, as well as potential for amenities like nordic skiing trails, and night skiing, as well as summer recreation activities.

Hyland Hills Ski Area

Hyland Hills Ski Area is a ski area in Bloomington, Minnesota, United States, just south of Minneapolis. It is owned and operated by Three Rivers Park District. It is one of the three ski areas in the Twin Cities metropolitan area; the others are Afton Alps, and Buck Hill. As a popular destination located near the Mall of America, Hyland receives 160,000 visitors per year. While Minnesota's winters are cold, the average snowfall is low for a ski area (less than 60 in.), due to this, there is often use of Artificial snow to help maintain the viability of the slopes. In 2016 the chalet underwent a $13.3 million renovation that more than doubled the size of the previous. The new chalet is 36,000 square-feet and includes a gear shop, rentals, and a restaurant.
