This seems to be fairly easy but I suspect that it's going to be painful to install. There are is several different approaches that should work. One of those is to use the I/O expanders as mentioned by WhatRoughBeast. What I don't like about those is the logic level thresholds.I'm going to suggest something a little bit different. I'm fond of the really old CMOS analog multiplexers like CD4051. These are dirt cheap and readily available from a number of manufacturers in both SOIC and DIP packages. Each of these will handle 8 inputs.You mention that you want to monitor 128 LEDs. I'm suggesting that you use 7 of these 4051 mux chips. Each has several control lines and 3 power supply pins. Vee goes to ground, as does Ground. !Ena goes to ground as well (the "!" indicates active-LO). The 3 control lines A, B, C are all connected together on each of the chips and come from your micro.I'm partial to the PIC family from Microchip. One interesting and very useful specification is that for a PIC16F PIC running from a 5V supply, the logic HI threshold for TTL inputs is about 1.3V . But be careful - some pins have ST (Schmitt Trigger) inputs - these have a logic HI input of about 80% of Vdd (about 4V). You do NOT want to use a ST input pin for monitoring the output of the mux.Anyway, connect the "Z" pin of each mux to a PIC input pin having TTL threshold. Drive all of the A, B, C lines on the muxes from the PIC. Note that this allows you to read 7 input bits in one fell swoop.This will give you a very fast read capability. Set address "000" on lines A,B,C and read all 7 muxes at once. Store this data, then set address "001" on the control lines and read again. And again. 8 reads later, you are done. Do with the data what you need to do.Not only is this approach faster than using I2C, it requires much simpler code and the 4051 chips cost significantly less than I2C expander chips. One final point: I don't know what is driving the LEDs from your original controller. If they are coming from symmetrical-drive logic chips, no problem. But if they are coming from an open-drain or open-source type driver, you may have problems with the voltage at each LED hovering just below the LED's threshold voltage. This will cause you all kinds of grief.The cure is simple: just use medium-high pull-down resistors on the MUX inputs. I'm going to suggest that somewhere between 10k - 47k should be good. Also note that these can be physically quite small - simply use a 10-pin bussed SIP resistor network. One small package per MUX chipI have a pretty straight forward question but every answer I come up with seems over complicated or just plain wrong. I'm designing a data logger/fault detection system to be used for a large piece of industrial equipment. Having an amount that is different from your LED strip voltage could damage the lights, or be unsafe. 12-volt strips are an excellent choice for most locations and use less power. 24-volt strips have twice the run length of 12-volt strips so they are suitable for projects that require a longer length of the area, such as outdoor lighting. The brightness of the lights does not depend on the voltage, but instead, depends on the quality of the diode. STEP 2: Determine the Maximum Power of Your LED Strip Each LED light strip uses a certain amount of wattage on the strip. Check your package to see how many watts are used per foot. Then multiply the watts by the length of the strip you will be using. For example, if I have a LED strip that is 25 ft long and has a requires 5 watts per foot, you can find the total wattage by multiplying 25 x 5 = 125 watts. Once you've found out the total wattage of your LED strip, you will want to find the minimum power rating. This will give us the least amount of wattage the power source needs to light our LED strip. To do that, we multiply our total watts from before (125 watts) by the number 1.2. The power supply should have at least 150 watts to ensure the LED strip will work. At times, your LED light may need more power, so to ensure we have enough power in this instance, we add 20%. STEP 4: Divide the Power Consumption by the Voltage to Find the Minimum Amps Required Amps are how fast the electricity moves through a current. If there are not enough amps for a long strip of LED lights, then the lights may dim or shut off, which is an essential part of the process. Luckily, it's easy. Let's go back. You will recall we had 125 watts of power. To find the minimum amps required, we will just divide our strips voltage (either 12 or 24) by the power 125. Let's say we use 12-volt wiring. This will give us the information we need to power the LED strip. The adapters look like ones similar to what you would use to power a laptop. With the math out of the way, now let's get into the installation. To install an LED strip to a power source, you will need the following items: By connecting these three sources, you will have a fully functional LED strip. You will want to test it a few times to make sure it's good to go. Just follow these steps. Most LED strips will come with a plug, but you may need to use only a portion of the strip. In that case, you will need to cut and add wiring. This sounds complicated but is not . To cut your LED strip, simply look for the cut symbol marked with a scissor line. These can be found at different points on the LED strip. Simply measure, then cut on the line, and that part is done. Next, to connect the LED strip to a switch, you can use a strip connector, or you can solder the wire to the LED strip. Soldering makes a more reliable connection but requires more skill. Next, connect the switch to the other end of the connector using either the strip connector or, if no cutting was required, the attached connector. STEP 2: Attach Your Switch to the Power Supply Once you have attached your LED strip to a switch, dimmer switch, or Bluetooth wireless switch, it's time to connect it to your power supply. You can either wire this through a wall-mounted switch or a simple switch with a barrel connector. Did you know: some of the lights you have in your house are damaging your mitochondria (and thus adding to your fatigue)?Your mitochondria are so attuned with your environment that even the types of light you are exposed to each day can cause fatigue! The "bad" light I'm referring to here is a modern-day invention. Some refer to it as junk light. Others as white or blue light.The mitochondrial damaging light is a recent development for the human species. I'm referring specifically to compact fluorescent bulbs and the new LED (light emitting diode) bulbs - yes those same ones that last for years and years. These bulbs contain specific wavelengths of light that are particularly damaging to your mitochondria.And as I hope you know, underfunctioning and/or damaged mitochondria results in fatigue.Your body on lightYour ancestors had been exposed to the same type of light (the sun) for millions of years. (1) Millions of years! That is an incredibly long time for your body to adapt to one type of light. Through the sun, your mitochondria are best able to absorb and utilize light. They struggle when exposed to modern-day lighting.The compact fluorescent light was invented in 1976 and made its way into houses and offices in the 1980s. (2) Compact fluorescent bulbs are the spiral bulbs like the one found in the picture at the top of this post. The fluorescent tube lights - the ones you commonly see in office spaces - began being sold in 1938. Making their way into most offices by the 1950s. (3)LEDs (light emitting diodes) are the most recent lights to enter the commercial market. They were developed in the 1990s and only became affordable in the past few years. In the early 1900s, the incandescent light bulb changed that. Humans were able to illuminate the dark. These tiny structures, found within nearly every cell in your body, produce a substance called ATP (adenosine triphosphate). And ATP is the energy that powers your body.Those with chronic fatigue syndrome and/or myalgic encephalomyelitis have a reduced functioning of their mitochondria. This results in a net energy deficit. (5) In order to increase your energy and overcome fatigue, you need to optimize your mitochondrial function.And the lighting you use in your environment is the perfect place to start.Just like you, your mitochondria have evolved over millions of years to utilize the energy of the sun. The small amount of money you save on your energy bill using CFLs or LEDs is not worth the cost to your mitochondria.If you work in an office where you don't have control of the lighting, you're going to need to be extra vigilant. To combat blue light exposure, you need to increase your exposure to red light sources. Your best bet will be getting outside every chance you get.Take your coffee break outdoors. Go for a walk at lunch. Look out a well-lit window. Try to get outside when the sun is at its zenith in the midday. Stay outside for at least fifteen minutes, ensuring you have as much skin exposed to the sun as comfortable.What do you do if you live at a latitude that results in very cold temperatures for half the year? Or, if you live in an area constantly covered by clouds?You're going to need to utilize technology to increase your red light exposure. In the morning, expose your body to an ultraviolet sun lamp. I recommend spending 10-15 minutes each morning during the winter months in front of it. While working in your office, invest in some red LEDs. These will ensure your mitochondria get exposed to the red wavelength during the day. This will mimic a sunrise ensuring your body has a healthy cortisol awakening response. This is why so many people notice an increase in fatigue during the winter months - a lack of sunlight exposure.As the day progresses into night, you're going to want to decrease your body's exposure to blue light. Blue light is the wavelength that signals to your body that it's daytime. It's this wavelength that suppresses melatonin production. Remember, you need your body to produce melatonin in order to easily fall asleep.In the evening, ensure your electronic devices (cell phone, computer, television, etc.) have their blue light filter enabled. This blocks the blue light frequency from screens which ensures your body is still able to produce melatonin before bed. There are apps like f.lux that you can install on your devices to ensure blue light is blocked when the sun starts to set. Most cell phones come equipped with blue-light blockers in their operating system.Devices aside, as you approach bedtime, you are going to want to decrease your body's exposure to all light sources. Your skin is the largest organ in your body. And it is full of light receptors. Even if your eyes are not exposed to light, your skin will be. Dim all your lights two hours before bed. And be absolutely certain that your body is not being exposed to any sources of blue light.Make your bedroom as dark as a cave. It should be so dark that you struggle to see your hand in front of your face. Blackout blinds are a must (especially in the summer months). Ensuring your bedroom is this dark will allow your body to produce enough melatonin to keep you asleep all night long. Restful sleep is absolutely essential for anyone working towards overcoming fatigue.One last trick that can improve your sleep is to purchase (and use) orange-lensed glasses in the evening. These glasses block the blue wavelength from entering your eyes. Doing this will help increase your body's melatonin production.
