Do You Like This Holiday Poem?

No. Christmas means different things to everyone...and whomever wrote this is implying everyone celebrates the same. NOT TRUE! Plus, this is overly rhymey.

1. Why isn't today a holiday?

Why would it be a holiday? There is NOTHING to celebrate. Today, 5 years ago was one of the greatest tragedies this country ever faced!

2. Planning a holiday to Australia - any tips?

Things to remember: it's winter in Australia and buying tickets now are going to be very expensive. Usually you want to buy tickets six months or so in advance. I have heard that Melbourne is a cooler city than Sydney. A lot of Australians have told me that Sydney is overrated. I am not going to Australia until May though and then I am staying through June. I am going to Brisbane and I have heard that is a good city to see to.

sophisticated problem. query with google. that will could actually help!

4. me and my mom are alone this holiday?

You know, I feel for you. Three years ago, my parents and brother died, all while I went through a very bitter divorce. I had full custody of my children, but they were spending Christmas visiting their father (as court-ordered). My father died in October of that year, then my brother died in December, and my mother died 6 months later, in June of the following year. That Christmas 2005, was the second Christmas without my father and brother and the first without my mother as well. I was also without my children. Because my divorce was so bitter and it happened during the time my family members were dying, I put all of my energies into being strong for my kids. I therefore did not allow myself to grieve. When Christmas came around and I knew I would be alone, my remaining 4 siblings invited me to spend Christmas with them. I told them thank you, but I wanted to be alone. People felt sorry for me, but I actually had a wonderful day. I spent the day in my pajamas, eating junk food and popcorn and watching movies. I wrote a poem for each of my parents and my brother who died. I let myself do some crying, which was very good for me, because I am a person who just never feels the need to cry and who does not cry easily, even when others would cry in the same situation. The day was very healing for me. When my children returned home after Christmas, we opened presents then and made the day special. The thing about being alone on any holiday is not so much about being alone, but about being lonely. If you and your mother are alone together, then you do not need to feel lonely, because you can make the day special. You can go out for Thanksgiving dinner at a restaurant, or eat take-out fast food and take in a movie. If that is not feasible, then you can play games together, watch movies on tv together, bake or cook together or do other things and just hang out. While it may not be as fun as going to someone's house and having a huge feast (especially if you and your mother do not get along - IF that is the case), doing what you can do to make the day special SOMEHOW, will take the sting out of being alone. If it's not possible to have some quality time with your mother, then do something you enjoy doing for YOU. Another thing you can do is to volunteer to help serve Thanksgiving dinner at a homeless shelter, or go visit nursing home patients who are often forgotten on the holidays. Often when we volunteer or take the focus off of ourselves, we get such an emotional high from doing a kind thing to someone else, that it makes it more fun than celebrating the holiday in the traditional way. My nephew and his wife do not exchange Christmas presents on Christmas. Instead, what they do is collect socks, blankets and jackets and go downtown and hand them out to homeless people on Christmas. The joy they get from doing that far surpasses any joy they could receive from spending the day together with family opening tons of presents under a tree. On a final note, I want to say, without sounding like I am trying to brag, that I am a direct descendant of a Pilgrim. I am the 10th great-granddaughter of Governor William Bradford, who was the 2nd governor of Plymouth after the first governor died. What we know about Thanksgiving is due to the detailed journals that William Bradford kept of the journey the Pilgrims made and of their struggles and their lives. One of the facts that many people do not realize about the first Thanksgiving, is that it did not happen the way that folklore has said it did. The Pilgrims did not have a special day that they gathered together and pigged out and feasted, giving thanks for their bountiful harvest. In fact, to do that would have gone against their religious beliefs. They would not set aside a day to feast, as that would have been considered gluttonous. Rather, they were grateful for the blessing of having survived a harsh winter, with the help of the Indians who helped them, and having had a good harvest. It was the harvest and the chance to learn the ways of survival from their Indian friends, that allowed them to survive, after more than half of those who sailed on the Mayflower, dying that first year. When they gave thanks, it was not a special day, set aside, but rather something they did in general and with appreciation to God for the blessings He gave. When they invited the Indians to share in the harvest, it was to let loose and have fun - not to give thanks in a feast, which as I said, they would have considered a form of gluttony and sinful. Contrary to tradition, they did not dress in somber clothing (black and gray hues), but dressed in vibrant colors, as well as in darker tones. It was not until the Puritan era a few years later, that clothing styles became more somber. They played music, sang songs, whooped and hollered and fired guns in the air, in celebration of their blessings. They had endured a lot and were happy and joyous, and therefore wanted to celebrate. When the Indians heard the gunshots, they sent out a scouting party to make sure all was well. The Indians were worried about rival tribes and did not fully place their trust in anyone, including the Pilgrims. When the scouting party arrived to find the celebration, they were gone for a couple of days or so. Other Indians arrived to check things out and the Pilgrims invited men, women, children, warriors etc to join in the celebration. There were lots more people celebrating than has been depicted through history. The celebration took place over a period of several days - not one single day as tradition states. Not only that, but the food that we commonly associate with Thanksgiving is only a little bit similar to what the Pilgrims and Indians ate during the celebration. They did not have pumpkin pies, nor was roast turkey the main course. While they did have wild game, they also ate fish. The food they ate at that time would not be as appealing to later generations as the food we associate with Thanksgiving is now. I mean, would not you rather think of Thanksgiving as having roast turkey instead of cooked/boiled fish? Pumpkin pie instead of a sort of pumpkin mush (without the seasonings) sounds MUCH more appealing!! The Pilgrims and Indians remained friends for about 20 years or so, before relations changed and with the arrival of more European settlers, the attitudes of the settlers (including Pilgrims and their descendants) turned hostile toward the Indians and there were conflicts. Perhaps this is not a story that most Americans want to hear on the day they celebrate Thanksgiving. Still, I have personally researched this myself and there is an organization dedicated to preserving the heritage of the Pilgrims and telling their story with accuracy instead of passing down years of tradition which was not entirely factual. My point to this story is to tell you that Thanksgiving as we celebrate it today, is not how it actually was when the Pilgrims gave their Thanksgiving. In fact, the Pilgrims had many Thanksgiving days, but they were not a holiday. Rather, these days were days set aside for whatever situation the Pilgrims were thankful for, and they were a reverent time of thanksgiving, rather than a feasting day. They celebrated their blessings with music, fun and games, but they gave thanks in a reverent manner on a different day. The true meaning of the American holiday of Thanksgiving, if we really want to celebrate in the manner the Pilgrims did, is not about the feast and getting together with family and being with other people. It is about setting a day aside to thank God for the blessings in our lives and to contemplate on and appreciate these blessings in a grateful manner. A person can do this in the company of others, or alone. Either way, when you and your mother spend Thanksgiving together tomorrow and you are alone, consider that you are celebrating Thanksgiving more in the TRUE meaning/intent of the holiday than the vast majority of Americans, who will be celebrating with food and tv and planning their "day after Thanksgiving shopping sale extravaganza". You have the opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving in the manner that the Pilgrims did tomorrow. That is something to be thankful for. I am a descendent of a Pilgrim and yet I and my family will be eating a "traditional" Thanksgiving meal together because it's what we've "always done" and it feels weird to do otherwise. Still, had my brother not invited us to his home for dinner (we are doing less and less of that sort of thing since my parents died), I would have spent Thanksgiving at home with my children, still having a turkey and trimmings because my children look forward to it, but doing something special that we all enjoy and thanking God for His blessings in our lives. I will still be thanking God at my brother's house, but if I had to spend it alone, I know it would not be all that bad. May you and your mother have a blessed and happy day together tomorrow. Having lost both of my parents, it is truly a blessing that you have your mother with you. Having had my child taken away from me for a year (my ex-husband kidnapped my daughter) and then returned, I know the feeling of losing a child (although only temporarily). Your mother is therefore also blessed to have you with her. So you see, you already have 2 blessings to celebrate tomorrow!!! Have a wonderful day.

This place has a wonderfull night market and in the mountains has a wonderful temple and nearby a Royal palace which are both must visits. I then spent 2 days in Bangkok doing bargain shopping , which is a must and while I was there caught the local ferry up River which took me past all the sights in a 3 hour round trip for only 40 Baht. I then went to Pattaya to join up with my friends and did water skiing , diving , para-gliding during the day and hit the Bars and clubs at night. I had a wonderfull time in The Land of Smiles my only regret is that I had to come back !1. She makes up flyer's and takes them around to everyone in her neighborhood as well as mine. She puts a date on when she will be collecting them and asks if they would leave them on the porch in a bag to collect. The first year she took a fly-er into the school and asked the principal if it would be ok for her to hang it up and he said no. She went to the elementary and high school and they let her hang a flyer in the teachers lounge and the students decided to collect money to give to her for the kids. They collected over $200 in one day. You could do the same for your son. Also if he is old enough I would have him ask his principal or have him with you when you ask. You could also go to different stores and ask for donations and raffle the items off the same time as the Elmo Live. You could also sale food and drinks while the raffle is going on to earn more money. A lot of business will donate food items for free if you tell them what it is for and that you will make sure you have a sign saying that they donated the item. Also you could ask stores if you could set up a table to try and get donations for the kids. You could have a sign with the name of the organization on the front and a can for the money. You could also have the boys make ornaments, cookies, etc for them to try to sale. If you have a WalMart by you I would call them first because they let us set up a table for Habitat for Hounds Rescue. As far as gifts I would first ask if their are any items that the boys are not aloud to have before you start buying. You could buy them clothing in different sizes, hats, shoes, socks, hand held video games, books, DVD, CD, portable CD player, cards, chess board, and any items that they may need when the turn 18 and have to leave and live on their own like lamps, blankets, pillows, etc. I am sorry it is so long, but I hoped I help. Good Luck! I hope you get a lot of donations3. What shoes/boots should every woman have at least one pair of? Please list all. WWAD: What Would Athiests Do?
WWAD: What Would Athiests Do?Some do so because they are not out as atheists. Some do so in order not to rock the boat among religious family members. Some do so because they always have and do not want to change or simply enjoy the holiday. Others argue that it should be replaced by a more rational holiday, and still others argue that all such holidays should be ignored Traditionally, Christmas has basically been a Christian holiday. It is, after all, Christ's Mass where the Nativity of Jesus is celebrated. Many atheists do not believe that Jesus existed, and those who do do not regard him as having been anyone special. Holiday Blues Hit Jewelry Sales
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Sellers of bling caught the blues this past Christmas. Jewelry sellers in North America and Europe on Thursday said sales plunged during key months of the 2008 holiday shopping season, hurt by the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression and bad winter weather in the United States before Christmas. Many retailers struggled through their worse holiday shopping season in about four decades and jewelers, who traditionally book about one-third of their annual sales in the last months of the year, were not immune. JMP Securities analyst Kristine Koerber, who covers upscale jewelry seller Tiffany & Co and online retailer Blue Nile Inc, said the declines were unprecedented. "Who knows how long it's going to go on ...? If the '09 holiday is worse than '08 holiday we have some big problems," said Koerber. But she gave credit to jewelry retailers for cutting costs to compensate for consumers' new frugality. Signet Jewelers Ltd, the world's biggest specialty jeweler, reported a 15.2 percent plunge in underlying sales for the 9 weeks ended January 3, including a 10.9 percent fall in the United Kingdom and a 16.4 percent decline in its main U.S. market. The group, whose stores include mid-tier retailers like H. Samuel and Ernest Jones in the United Kingdom and as Kay Jewelers and Jared the Galleria of Jewelry in the United States, also said it would stop paying dividends. Rival Zale Corp said sales at established stores fell 19.6 percent in November and December from a year ago. "This holiday period was the most difficult in memory due to the overall macroeconomic situation," Zale Chief Executive Neal Goldberg said. Finlay Enterprises Inc, which has its own shops and also operates counters in U.S. department stores like Macy's Inc and Lord & Taylor, saw November and December sales drop 23.7 percent to $265.9 million. The company, which also operates chains such as Carlyle and Bailey Banks & Biddle, said sales at established stores fell 20.1 percent during November and December. Shares of Zale slid 7.64 percent to close at $3.75, while Tiffany fell 3.02 percent to $24.08, both on the New York Stock Exchange. Signet rose 1.4 percent after it said it would not disappoint market expectations for full year profit. Finlay, which in December warned that it was suffering liquidity problems, trades for 4 cents a share on the over-the-counter market. Discounters like Wal-Mart Stores Inc and BJ's Wholesale Club also reported a hit to jewelry sales in December, while J.C. Penney Co Inc said its fine jewelry sales were soft. JMP Securities analyst Koerber said she expects Blue Nile's net sales to be down 16 percent for the holiday quarter. Its shares fell 2.77 percent to $23.15 on Nasdaq. Koerber is forecasting a 34 percent decline in U.S. fourth-quarter same-store sales at Tiffany, which said early last month it would cut about 800 jobs in the United States as the recession leads even affluent customers to cut spending.
The Best Spots for a Diving Holiday in Europe
Europe has some of the best diving spots in the world. Here, you will find a huge coral and sea life diversity and many shipwrecks to explore. You can have a great diving holiday in Europe by sticking to diving along a single coastline or island, where there are many spots to try. However, if possible, hitting diving spots from south to the north will allow you to explore a huge coral diversity.Malta and Gozo — Clear warm water and beautiful landscapeScuba diving in Malta is a wonderful experience. The Maltese archipelago is just south of Sicily and 288 kilometers north of Africa and it comprises three main islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino. The islands enjoy excellent weather throughout the year and you can have a diving holiday in Malta even in winter, where temperatures rarely, if ever, drop below 10 degrees Celsius. The locals are very friendly and speak excellent English, Italian and Maltese. If visiting Malta, two dive spots should be on your radar. First, go to Cirkewwa in Malta. Since Malta is the only island that has an airport, you will probably arrive here. Cirkewwa is a harbor situated at the northernmost part of Malta and it is one of the island's top diving spots. Here, you can explore underwater cliffs, caves, tunnels and two shipwrecks: the tugboat MV Rozi and the P29 patrol boat. From Cirkewwa, there is a short 30 minutes ferryboat ride to Gozo. Here you will find an island sea and the famous "Azure Window", an impressive limestone natural arch situated in the Dwejra Bay. A tunnel links cliff-surrounded lagoon to the open sea. Sea life here includes seahorses, fish rays and multiple species of fish. The Dalmatian Coast, Croatia — Hundreds of underwater caves to exploreThe Dalmatian Coast greets the Adriatic Sea with picturesque medieval towns perched on high cliffs. The mountainous terrain dives straight in the seabed and the results is an array of underwater caves and tunnels, perfect for scuba diving. The Dalmatian Riviera is also a top destination for a yachting holiday. Many islands are only accessible by boat and are perfect spots for a diving holiday in Europe. There are over 150 diving centers scattered along the Adriatic Coast and it is rare to find two boats on the same site. Although extremely beautiful, the coast is not very popular and not that crowded. The landscape is breathtaking and there are many islands and inlets to explore. We recommend Hvar Island as your headquarters for scuba diving. This is the second largest island in Croatia and features numerous attractions both above and below the water. The archipelago has many beautiful diving spots that are just a few minutes away. The flora and fauna of the Adriatic Sea are spectacular. You can see scorpionfish, seahorses, moray eels, shoals of cuttlefish and lobsters among many other species. Shipwrecks are also a main attraction here. Many ships have been sunk during WW2, leaving fascinating wrecks that are worth exploring. Iceland, Silfra in Thingvellir National Park — Dive between Tectonic PlatesIceland can be an excellent destination for a diving holiday. Silfra is a unique diving spot in Iceland. Situated in Thingvellir National Park, the area is on the tectonic plate boundaries of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. You will dive in clear freshwater in a crack between the American and European continental shelves. This is the only place where one can dive or snorkel directly in the crack between two continental plates.Silfra's main attraction is the clear water. Diving here feels like flying above the seabed. Also, the light that hits the surface and bounces off the waves often creates spectacular rainbows. The water is very cold with an average temperature of 2 degrees Celsius, so proper equipment is required. You will not find an abundance of sea life, but the algae that cover the bottom are colorful and paint the landscape in a pretty and unique light. Another big attraction are the extraordinary sea caves that can be explored. The Thingvallavatn Lake is next to Silfra and it is also worth a dive as the canyons on the bottom are impressive. Kilkee, Ireland — Impressive Walls and Rock FormationsKilkee, Ireland's top diving spot, is perfect for a diving holiday in Europe. There are many things to explore here Starting with the rock formations and finishing with the many shipwrecks that are scattered on the sea floor, you will enjoy every minute of your dive. The area has many diving sites suitable for beginners and experts alike. The many reefs hold an abundance of marine life that fascinates and entertains. Dolphins may join you on your swim and they are great companions for exploring caves and tunnels. You can dive up to 10 meters (32 feet) to 45 meters (147 feet). The Scuba club in Kilkee is suitable to offer equipment and instruction to novice divers. Guides will direct you to the best spots with clear water and interesting marine fauna.Scapa Flow, Scotland — Dive Straight into HistoryScapa Flow is a body of water near the Orkney Islands, which saw a lot of naval action in WW1, especially during the German's High Fleet retreat. Many of the ships who were sunk back then can now be visited and they have made Scapa Flow one of the best diving sites in Europe.Apart from German ships, blocking ships, vessels that were deliberately sunk to prevent access to the bay, also rest on the sea floor. All the wrecks are covered in marine fauna and exploring them is a wonderful experience. It is possible to dive all year round at Scapa Flow. The best visibility is between December and March, but they are also the coldest months (with an average water temperature of seven degrees Celsius) with the shortest days.Europe can be the perfect destination for an exciting diving holiday. The waters here are worth exploring every minute.Originally published at noble.lifeDo you have to be licensed or anything to dive in Florida?yes, you do. check a dive shop. you have to take classes and the like
